  10. THIRD WAVE COMPUTING INTRODUCES 1.3GB 4 mm DAT DRIVE

  12. AUSTIN, TEXAS, December 4, 1989——Third Wave Computing, Inc. has introduced the
  13. first half-height 4mm DAT drive for the Macintosh.  Utilizing the industry
  14. standard DDS (HP/Sony) format, the Third Wave DATadrive™ offers storage of up
  15. to 1.3GB per tape, and backup speeds of up to 10MB per minute.

  17. The DATadrive is an ideal storage medium for data intensive applications such
  18. as image processing and network file serving.  The DDS format has three levels
  19. of error correction, read-after-write error checking, and up to 4MB per second
  20. burst transfer rate.  In addition, the DDS format allows for fast record
  21. searching, as the search can be performed at up to 200 times normal speed,
  22. providing access to the entire tape (1.3 GB of data) in an average of 20
  23. seconds.  One advantage over other 4mm DAT formats is the fact that DDS tapes
  24. do not have to be formatted; they work right out of the box.  Formatting other
  25. types takes about 2 hours per tape.

  27. The archival/backup management software included with the DATadrive is the
  28. widely respected Retrospect from Dantz Development.  Retrospect allows very
  29. easy control of the huge amounts of data that the DATadrive can store, with
  30. very quick backup and retrieval times.  In addition, Retrospect offers a
  31. complete set of customizable features, including scripting, scheduling
  32. automatic backups, and more.
